What are the best phones for photography?

Phone Photography

The great thing about many of the smartphones available today is that they double up as quality cameras. Meaning, if you’re a budding photographer or you’re considering taking up the hobby, you can save yourself some serious cash by purchasing a top-level camera smartphone, rather than a camera and mobile phone separately.

Not only do some smartphones have cameras to rival DSLRs, but there are many photography apps you can download to make your snaps look, well, picture perfect!

First things first, though: the best camera smartphones aren’t cheap, so it’s important that you protect them with insurance.

What smartphones have the best cameras?

TechRadar recently tested some of the leading handsets on the market to discover which device had the best cameras.

It noted how Apple’s newest smartphones – the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max – are evidently vying for the top spot, but haven’t quite reached it.

As TechRadar explains, testing smartphone cameras involves more than looking at a specs lists, or choosing the newest handset. ‘So much of a camera phone’s quality is determined by software optimisation as much as sensor and lens power,’ the article states.

So, which handsets feature top of TechRadar’s list, and why? Let’s take a look…

  1. Huawei P30 Pro

Huawei’s P30 Pro has been rigorously developed to be the best camera smartphone on the market. In tests by TechRadar, the device came top for low-light photographs, while its ‘periscope’ telephoto lens was found to take brilliant, optically-zoomed snaps from a distance.

The handset has four cameras on the back – a 40MP main lens, 8MP telephoto lens, 20MP ultra-wide lens and a time-of-flight (ToF) camera that senses depth for portrait photos.

The smartphone also has a red yellow yellow blue (RYYB) sensor to capture more light, which is arguably better than the red green blue (RGB) industry standard.

The result? Pictures that achieve the perfect balance of detail and exposure. You can shoot in the dark as if all the lights were on, and get incredibly close to objects thanks to the 50 x zoom.

It’s not all perfect, though. TechRadar noted how the camera software controls were sometimes unresponsive when switching between ultra-wide, 5 x zoom, 10 x zoom and a digital 50 x zoom.

  1. Google Pixel 3 / Google Pixel 3 XL

The Pixel 3 comes second on the list and at times, rates better for image colour than the P30 Pro.

While most top camera smartphones have at least two rear cameras, the Pixel 3 has just one, but it’s incredibly consistent in terms of producing sharp, bright photos (more so than rivals like the iPhone X Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 9).

All cameras on the device are powerful, with the intuitive interface and AI smarts adjusting brilliantly to any type of shot, from huge panoramas to low-light portraits.

Google’s Pixel Visual Core chip and AI software cleverly recognise what images should look like and which images you’ll actually want.

Where the Pixel 3 misses the mark, though, is its Night Mode for long exposure shots. The P30 pips it to the post, even though the Google device does a decent job.

  1. Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

New cameras have been integrated into Samsung’s S10 range. Along with an improved standard cam plus a 2 x optical lens on the S10 and S10 Plus, all phones feature a 123-degree ultra-wide lens on the back.

TechRadar rates the S10 cameras for being versatile and fun to play with, owing mainly to its market-leading camera software.

It’s got some great features like Colour Point, where you can apply a monochrome background to images while objects in the foreground remain in colour. You can also use ‘spin’ and ‘zoom’ controls to manipulate the background.

You’re not going to get better shots with the S10 compared with the P30 Pro or Pixel 3, but it’s still one of the top camera smartphones, plus the mega 6.4-inch display is the best.
